Can You Run Two Antivirus Programs at the Same Time?

Why two resident engines break things
Both install file-system filter drivers and both try to inspect the same file at the same moment. Each may see the other's quarantine or temporary files as suspicious. The results are crashes, freezes, enormous CPU use and — worst of all — detections that are dropped because the file was locked by the other engine.
The safe combination
Keep one resident product — Microsoft Defender or a third-party suite — and add an on-demand scanner such as the free version of Malwarebytes. Because the free scanner has no resident component, there is nothing to conflict with.
Defender's periodic scanning option
If you install a third-party antivirus, Windows lets you optionally re-enable Defender in periodic-scanning mode. That runs Defender occasionally on demand, not in real time, so it is a supported exception rather than a conflict.
